Who We Are
Harambee for Kenya derives its name from the Swahili word Harambee, meaning "all pull together." Our organization is dedicated to transforming the lives of street children in Kenya, providing them with the care, protection, and opportunities they deserve. Many of these children find themselves on the streets due to circumstances beyond their control—whether orphaned by AIDS or other illnesses, abandoned due to extreme poverty, or forced to leave home due to neglect and abuse. Without a stable home, these children face unimaginable hardships, including violence, malnutrition, and lack of identity. Our goal is to break this cycle and offer them a future filled with hope and dignity.
Harambee for Kenya was founded in 2007 when our founders, who had been supporting Kenya Scouts in assisting street children, realized a more permanent solution was needed. They saw how these children would temporarily benefit from scout meetings, only to return to their harsh reality on the streets once the sessions ended. This conviction led to the establishment of a safe house dedicated to providing long-term care and rehabilitation, particularly focusing on boys, who are often harder to place in family homes.

Our Journey & Impact
Since our inception, Harambee for Kenya has made significant strides in changing the lives of street children. Our first project began in Kisii, located approximately 5.5 hours west of Nairobi. Over the years, we have expanded, and our latest home is situated a similar distance northeast of the capital. Today, we care for approximately 80 boys, many of whom were previously orphaned or destitute.
We ensure that every child in our care receives proper shelter, medical attention, nutritious meals, and quality education. Our approach is holistic, addressing not only their physical needs but also their emotional and psychological well-being. Many of the children who have grown up in our program have successfully transitioned into independent adulthood, securing employment and even reintegrating into family homes where possible. Our greatest success is seeing them thrive as valued and responsible members of society.
At Harambee for Kenya, our mission is to restore dignity, hope, and opportunity to disadvantaged children, giving them the foundation they need to build a better future. We are committed to:
Rescuing and rehabilitating street children by providing them with a safe and nurturing environment.
Ensuring they have access to healthcare, nutritious meals, and proper education.
Equipping them with life skills and vocational training to prepare them for self-sufficiency.
Reintegrating children into society as responsible and empowered individuals.
Our vision is rooted in 1 Samuel 2:8: "He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes and has them inherit a throne of honor." Inspired by this scripture, we strive to take children from the streets and place them in environments where they can flourish. Our goal is to see them grow into confident, self-sufficient adults who contribute positively to society.
We are driven by the following values:
- Compassion – Every child deserves love, care, and the chance for a better life.
- Integrity – We uphold transparency and accountability in all our operations.
- Empowerment – We equip children with skills and education to shape their future.
- Community – We believe in the power of working together to create lasting change.
We cannot do this alone. The spirit of Harambee calls for collective effort. Here’s how you can be part of our mission:
- Sponsor a Child – Your sponsorship can provide education, food, and healthcare for a child in need.
- Make a Donation – Every contribution helps us provide better resources and expand our reach.
- Volunteer – Your time and skills can make a tangible difference in these children's lives.
- Spread the Word – Help us raise awareness and bring more people into this mission of hope.
